Pragmatic is an adjective that describes people who are pragmatic and sensible. People who are pragmatic are focused on what actually works in the real world, and do not get caught up in unrealistic theories that may not be applicable in reality.
The word”pragmatic” comes from the Latin Praegere which translates to “to grasp.” Pragmatism is a philosophy that understands knowing the world as inseparable from agency within it. It also recognizes the nature of knowledge as a process of learning it from experiences, and is focused on how knowledge can be utilized in the context of the course of action.
William James described pragmatism in 1907 as a brand new term for some old ways of thinking. His lecture series, “Pragmatism – A New Name for Old Ways of Thinking” was an answer to this. The lecture began by identifying a fundamental and unsolvable tension between two ways to think about the hard-headed empiricist dedication of experience and relying on facts, and the gentle preference of a priori principle that appeals to rationalization. Origins
The term pragmatic originated in the United States around 1870. It gained popularity among American philosophers and the general public due to its close ties with modern social and natural sciences. At the time, it was viewed as a philosophical sibling to the scientific worldview. It was widely viewed as being capable of producing similar progress in inquiry into matters such as morality and the nature of life.
William James (1842-1910) is acknowledged as the first person to use the term pragmatic. He is considered to be the founder of modern psychology and the first pragmatist to be a founder. He is also believed to be the first person to come up with the concept of truth based on the empirical method. In his book ‘The Present Dilemma in Philosophy’, published in 1907, he outlined a fundamental distinction in the field of philosophy. He outlines a conflict between two ways to think the other being empiricist and based on ‘the facts’ and the second that is apriori-based and rely on the concept of ratiocination. He predicted that pragmatism would provide a bridge between these competing tendencies.
James believes that something is only true only if it is working. Therefore, his metaphysics allows the possibility that there might exist transcendent realities that are unknowable to us. He also acknowledges that pragmatism does not reject religion in principle and that religious beliefs may be valid for those who believe in them.
John Dewey (1859-1952) was a key figure in the pragmatists of classical times.
